F ood trucks have been around for quite some time now, and New Yorkers and out-of-towners indulge daily. In the old days, we used to be satisfied with our hot dogs and pretzels when we wanted street food, but since there are always new and fun [link: things to do in NYC popping up all over the place, we need more food (apparently) and there are quite a few food trucks who came to our rescue with inventive menus to fill these hungry bellies every day. Of course there are plenty of burritos, ice cream trucks, smoothies and burgers, but quite a few trucks have varied things up a bit and presented us with a more inventive meal.
Yvonne’s Jamaican Food Truck is a delicious stop for goat meat, oxtail and plantains. This authentic island food is served up with a New York attitude, and it’s a great stop for out of towners to taste the diversity of this city.
At the Korilla BBQ food truck you can get your meal in the form of a burrito, tacos or a chosun bowl. The choice is yours! There are four meat choices, two rice choices, 5 sauces to top with and a variety of other toppings. The tacos and burritos are very street-food-esque, but getting your meal in a bowl to eat as you walk down the street (because who can wait that long after getting food from here) is often a challenge. But every challenge here is graciously accepted and highly rewarded.
Taim Mobile is a falafel and smoothie truck. This husband and wife duo brings international flavors to the streets of New York City, and they serve up fresh and healthy flavors from this food truck. While much of the menu is pretty straightforward, from the falafel to the hummus and even some french fries on the side, they also introduce bold flavors in their smoothies in the form of an intriguing date-lime-banana smoothie. This is not your average Jamba Juice sensation, but a sensation it certainly is!
Wafels & Dinges is one of the least shocking of them all, but usually when you think of waffles, you think of sitting down at a breakfast table with a fork and knife, rather than diving face first into a heap of wafel, whipped cream, fruit or whatever topping you decide on. Of course you can get the traditional breakfast kind, you can get one topped with chili, you can get two wafels in between a scoop of ice cream, under pulled pork or with some bacon and syrup. When you come to NYC, you gotta live a little… And while you’re at it, definitely get a Liege waffle with Spekuloos spread.
The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck is not unexpected in the food they serve (ice cream) but rather in what they call it all. They close for the winter and open up again in late March, but once they’re back, it’s on. Then, feel free to come get your “Salty Pimp” or the “Mexican Affo’gay’to” or maybe even a Bea Arthur. The choice is yours, but there’s hardly a bad one here.
Of course, you can always stick with the famous New York hot dog carts that you find around almost all of the top New York City attractions, or you can look a little harder and find something new, fun and probably twice as delicious.
