M ention Turkey and you’ll no doubt get something of a mixed reaction. Some think of its lively family-orientated resorts and packed beaches and instantly dismiss it as just another ‘Brits abroad’ holiday destination. But for those in the know, Turkey is way beyond your average getaway.
For a start, it’s got a magnificent heritage spanning thousands of years. You only have to visit the museum in the grounds of Bodrum’s castle and view the finds of a shipwreck from the 14th century BC – yes, that’s BC – to know that this magical place is well worth a visit. Istanbul is the ultimate city break with its ancient sights, beautiful architecture and ancient-meets-modern appeal, which is evident in everything from its chic bars and designer boutiques to its palaces and historic temples.
It’s fair to say that Turkey has something for everyone. Families will love the got-it-all resorts of Dalaman, where kids can splash in the shallow waters and built sandcastles on the golden sands. Clubbers will love the bright lights of Bodrum. And intrepid sun-seekers will get their fix in the tiny hidden villages and secret bays of Antalya’s rugged coastline.
If you choose to travel as part of a package break, such as package holidays with Thomas Cook, you’ll find plenty of holidays in the main resorts of Dalaman, Bodrum, Antalya and Izmir. While you shouldn’t expect to get too far off the beaten track with a mainstream tour operator like this, you can still enjoy a wide range of holiday experiences, whatever type of getaway you’re after. If you want to spend time exploring different areas of Turkey and staying in various locations, the best bet is to book your own flights. That way you get much more flexibility and can go where the sights and sounds take you.
Whatever you fancy, Turkey is a magnificent destination that’s well worth a visit.
